Anne Walker

Blackwood Homes and Care are deeply saddened to learn former board member and long-term tenant, Anne Walker has passed away after a short illness. She was 69.

A universally popular member of the board and a champion for independent living, Anne left an indelible imprint on the lives of everyone she met with her enthusiasm and dedication to introduce positive change.

As someone with a disability, Anne experienced first-hand the transformation that a Blackwood home can have on an individual’s quality of life, and she became a strong advocate.

Anne said: Blackwood gave me back an independence that had been taken away from me – my Blackwood home gave me a new lease of life.

Knowledge and insight

Using her insight and experience, Anne shared her knowledge with Blackwood in co-design projects, so other tenants with similar mobility issues could benefit and live their lives to the full.  She contributed to the national debate on accessible housing and featured in podcasts alongside industry experts.

Anne served on the board for three years – from September 2015 to September 2018 – and added a valuable perspective to the overall direction of the organisation.

Passionate about innovation

Anne was also passionate about innovation and sat on the judging panel for the Blackwood Design Awards for many years; she took immense pride in seeing how technology could solve everyday problems and help people to live independently.

Blackwood CEO Simon Fitzpatrick said: “Anne was a passionate advocate for Blackwood and everyone who needed some help to live independently.  Her determination to live her own life to the full inspired others including Blackwood staff, customers, and members.

We will miss her kindness, commitment, quick wit, and insistence that customers were at the heart of whatever Blackwood does.  Quite simply, she lived our values.

Blackwood Chair Julie McDowell said: “As a tenant Board member, Anne represented everything that we believe Blackwood stands for.  Her leadership and commitment, alongside her passion for our customers, played a huge part in our success.  The Board owes her a debt of gratitude and we will miss her greatly.”

Blackwood would like to express our heartfelt condolences to Anne’s family and friends – her contribution to our organisation will never be forgotten.
